Prince William Sound Pinks
When the final numbers are tallied, the 2009 statewide commercial salmon harvest won't break any records. But the numbers won't be as weak as they looked like they might have been part way through the year either. Many in the state have blamed the shortfall on an apparent run failure at Prince William Sound, one of the state's prime pink salmon producing regions, where hatchery returns were significantly under forecast and wild pink salmon runs also proved unexpectedly weak. However, area management biologists say returns in the sound, while disappointing in year when exceptionally high harvest was predicted, weren't historically weak. KCHU's Erik Wander has more:
