Cordova's Shepard Point Project
The Shepard Point Project originated in 1992 by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, which appropriated funds for enhanced oil spill response in the communities of Tatitlek, Chenega and Cordova. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently taking public comment on Shepard Point, the proposed site of a deep water port in connection with the construction of the Cordova Oil Spill Response Facility. Those opposed believe the economic, environmental and social impact would be significant, and say there is a cheaper, less environmentally hazardous alternative closer to Cordova.
