Alaska Shield 2010
The city of Valdez is set to put its community emergency plans to the test next month, when it participates in Alaska Shield 2010. According to the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the main objective of the statewide emergency preparedness drill is to validate Alaska's ability to anticipate, prepare for and respond to a major event with widespread consequences affecting response and recovery. The mutli-agency, week-long exercise will simulate an earthquake scenario that cripples the state’s communications and transportation infrastructure and bring up to 300 members of the Army and Alaska National Guard to Valdez.
