Subsistence Way of Life
Until 1984 the Chitina dipnet fishery was
managed as a subsistence fishery, but since has bounced back and forth between
subsistence and personal use designation. The Alaska Board of Fisheries will
decide next month whether Chitina dip-netters should be classified as
personal-use or subsistence fishermen, after the Chitina Dipnetters Association
sued the state last year over the designation. Central to the board's decision
will be a definition of the term, "a subsistence way of life." Once
that determination is made, the BOF will re-evaluate the Chitina subdistrict's
