Cordova's Tidelands at Center of Proposed Natural Gas Project Discussion - 6/2/10

In order for a proposed natural gas utility project to move forward in Cordova’s Fleming Spit recreation area, tidelands in the area have to be zoned as “waterfront industrial.” Groups opposed to the filling of those tidelands say the zoning is at odds with a longstanding community vision and that the area is a highly valued public resource. They want a more rigorous public process with greater public input and say there are alternative locations for the commercial gas facility. But those who support the waterfront industrial zoning designation say the area in question has never been a conservation zone and is an appropriate area for development.
