Equipment failure causes seiner to sink further
by Tony Gorman
The Coast Guard will have a harder time recovering a salmon seiner that capsized in the Prince William Sound last weekend. On Thursday morning, an equipment failure during salvage operations caused the 36-foot Ice Maiden to completely sink to a depth of 180 ft. Intermittent diesel sheen was spilled as a result. Debris was also scattered over a three-mile corridor. No injuries were reported from the latest incident.
The Seward-based vessel capsized Sunday afternoon while retrieving a net full of salmon. The four-person crew was able to escape to a seine skiff before the incident occurred. The crew was safely transported to Cordova by two Good Samaritan fishing vessels.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
