VCVB is in trouble again
By Tony Gorman
The Valdez Convention and Visitors Bureua's hardships continue. Last week during a work session with Valdez City Council, the VCVB revealed that it needs more fund to cover costs through January 2012. At the end of the meeting, the Valdez City Council said it will consider giving the VCVB $153,000 to get it through that time period.
The VCVB has been in hot water since last year. Last year, the City of Valdez cut off funding from the entity until it produced an audit. An entity receiving over $100,000 from the city must produce an audit every year. It had not done an audit since 2008.
Valdez City Manager John Hozey decided to give the VCVB enough money to cover payroll and other bills through January of this year. Since then, the VCVB has postponed the audit dismissed its executive director, and laid off staff. Its board is looking at reogranizing the structure of its business model.
