Lunceford returns as mayor of Whittier

By Tony Gorman

It took two months, but the Whittier City Council is officially complete.  The Whittier City Council voted 5-2 at Tuesday night's meeting to re-elect Lester Lunceford as mayor and Jerry Vandergriff as vice mayor.

The decision comes after the city held a runoff last week to determine on Seat F and Proposition 1.  Lunceford, who was mayor last year, never formally filed to run for re-election.  But, he garnered enough write-in votes to beat out candidates Shannon Tolman and Alren Arneson.  The final results of the runoff show Lunceford received 71 votes, Tolman 51 votes, and Arneson 10 votes.

The Council also voted to pass Proposition 1 which increases the 2012 property tax from 5% to 8%.  The Proposition passed 66-65 in the runoff election.
