Coast Guard clears the BBC Arizona to sail

By Tony Gorman

After over two weeks of clean up, the BBC Arizona has been cleared to sail.  Last Friday, Valdez Marine Safety Unit Commander Benjamin Hawkins rescinded his port order against the cargo ship after Coast Guard personnel inspected it.  More than 50 personnel from several entities were demobilized after the decision.  It was last reported that the B-B-C Arizona reached the Gulf of Alaska Saturday en route to Mexico.

The B-B-C Arizona had been dock at the Valdez Container Terminal for 15 days following a small fire onboard.  The Valdez Fire Department determined the cause of the fire stemmed from an ignited leak from one of the containers.  It was later discovered that most of the containers were leaking transformer oil.  The cargo ship was ordered to stay in Valdez until it was cleaned and decontaminated.
