The roof of a former Valdez grocery store collapsed Tuesday night due snow overload. Valdez Police and Fire crews responded to the incident that happened at the old Three Bears building. Crews arrived on scene to find the roof caved in. K-C-H-U’S calls to the Valdez Police Department seeking comments were not returned at this time.

Mt. Eyak Ski Hill to reopen

Cordova skiers and snowboarders will finally be able to hit the slopes. According to the Cordova Times, the Mount Eyak ski hill is expected to open this weekend if the weather permits. The area’s towers and chair lifts had been buried in snow due the recent winter storm that occurred two weeks ago. According to Mount Eyak Ski Area General Manger Dan Branshaw, crews had made significant progress in digging the towers out from under the snow

Branshaw says the towers suffered no structural damage during the storm. He says crews have been removing snow around the towers in order to operate the chair lifts. The Mount Eyak ski area is slated to open tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday from 11 A-M to 4 P-M.

CVEA members to receive fuel credit

Copper Valley Electric Association members can breathe a little bit after getting blindsided by rate increases last month. During their regular meeting, yesterday (Thursday), C-V-E-A Board members approved a 500-thousand dollar fuel cost assistance credit toward residential power bills through May. The credit is worth 5-point-97 cents per kilowatt hour. That brings the cost of power from 25-point-3 to 19-point-4 cents per kilowatt hour.

C-V-E-A members got a shocker from finding a rate hike in last month’s bills. The cooperative cited the cost of fuel and hydro generation as reasons for the hike.

The Valdez City School District decided to cancel classes at all school for the rest of the week. District officials made the decision Wednesday after the snow weight/per square foot on the roof of Valdez High School exceeded its limit. The District says it will try to reopen schools on Monday.

Cordova School District closes schools for the rest of the week

Students in the Cordova School District will have to until next week to go back to class. The District announced Tuesday night that schools are closed for the rest of the week. The decision comes after assessing input from city officials, meteorologist reports, and information from the district's own investigation.

Despite the closure, the District says both Mt. Eccles Elementary School and Cordova Jr./Sr. High School are deemed secure. The District plans to take an unoffical reading of the weight/square foot of snow on the schools' roofs.
