Alaska National Guard responds to snow disaster in Cordova

Record snowfall hits Valdez

December was a record-setting month for Valdez.  The Prince William Sound community dubbed   the "Snowiest City in the Nation" by the Weather Channel in 2010 set a record for total snowfall last month.  As KCHU's Tony Gorman reports, Valdez is on it's way to setting a bigger record.

Longtime B&B owner found dead

AK Superior Court judge increases TAPS value

Sound Developer raised from Cordova Harbor

The Sound Developer is finally out of the Cordova Harbor after the Coast Guard determined the vessel wasn't a risk to the environment.  As KCHU's Tony Gorman reports,  the 135 ft. landing craft had been producing oil sheen since its sinking in 2009.

Lunceford returns as mayor of Whittier

It took two months, but the Whittier City Council is officially complete.  The Whittier City Council voted 5-2 at Tuesday night's meeting to re-elect Lester Lunceford as mayor and Jerry Vandergriff as vice mayor.

The decision comes after the city held a runoff last week to determine on Seat F and Proposition 1.  Lunceford, who was mayor last year, never formally filed to run for re-election.  But, he garnered enough write-in votes to beat out candidates Shannon Tolman and Alren Arneson.  The final results of the runoff show Lunceford received 71 votes, Tolman 51 votes, and Arneson 10 votes.

The Council also voted to pass Proposition 1 which increases the 2012 property tax from 5% to 8%.  The Proposition passed 66-65 in the runoff election.



Valdez City Council amends 2011 Budget

The Valdez City Council made two amendments to the 2011 Budget during Monday's regular meeting.

The Council voted unanimously to amend the budget for various funds to cover year-end projects and authorize certain expenditures.  Those projects include the Ski Tow Rope at the Salmonberry Ski Hill and replacing the roofs of Valdez High School and the Valdez Civic Center.

The council later voted, 4-2, to transfer $1.7 million from the reserve fund to the Permaent  Fund.  The move will effectively reverse the 1.5 percent appropriation of the Permanent Fund's market value.  Council members Karen Ables and Alan Sorum voted no the resolution.

City Councilman Joe Prax was not present at the time of either vote.

Captiol Hill Consulting Group and Hutchinson get lobbying contracts from Valdez

The City of Valdez is sticking to its guns for its lobbying need on the federal and state levels.The Valdez City Council voted unanimously to award lobbying contracts to Capitol Hill Consulting Group and Kim Hutchinson of Trust Consultants.

Capitol Hill has lobbied in Washington, D.C., on behald of the city for the past three years.  The firm's contract is worth over $36,000 dollars. 

Hutchinson's contract is worth $50,000.   Hutchinson and his firm, Trust Consultants, have lobbied in Juneau for the past 19 years. 

City councilman Joe Prax was not present at the time of the vote.
