Valdez School Board approves budget

The Valdez School Board unanimously approved the the 2012-2013 Fiscal Year budget Monday night.  As KCHU's Tony Gorman reports, the District plans to ask the City of the Valdez for additional funds to stay in the black.

Sixth grade to move to Gilson Jr. High School

Valdez men walk a mile in women's shoes for charity

Last week, communities across the state participated in Governor Sean Parnell’s Choose Respect March against domestic violence.  A group in Valdez is continuing that effort this month because April is Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  This week, Advocates for Victims of Violence held another “march”.  This time, it was for men ONLY.  KCHU’s Tony Gorman attended at the Valdez Civic Center and filed this report.

Excessive snow load causes Mt. Eccles Elementary School play area roof to collapse

PWSRCAC calls for improvements to oil spill prevention and cleanup plans

Fithian reappointed to Commission

A Copper Center resident is heading back to the National Park and Park Monument Subsistence Resource Commission.  Governor Sean Parnell’s office announced Robert Fithian‘s reappointment Monday.  Fithian is a master guide and has been the executive director of the Alaska Professional Hunter’s Association since 2002.  He’s also a member of the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council.  His seat is reserved to represent Wrangell-St. Elias Park and Preserve.

AK DOT extends Copper River Highway closure

A portion of the Copper River Highway is expected to be closed for several more years.  The Alaska Department of Transportation announced that the highway will remain closed at Bridge 339 at 36.5 Mile due to safety concerns.  Increased water flow forced DOT to close it down last summer.

A replacement bridge is in the works.  Last fall, DOT received funding to begin the design phase to replace the 35 year-old bridge and is expected to progress through 2013.  If the project gets agency permitting in 2014, construction could begin as early as 2015.   KCHU’s Tony Gorman has more.

Alaska Redistricting Board releases new map

The Alaska Redistricting Board released its latest version of the legislative district map to the public Tuesday night.  It is the first draft since the Alaska Supreme Court deemed the original draft unconstitutional because it put too much emphasis on protecting Native voting rights.  How does it affect our area?  KCHU’s Tony Gorman takes a look at where each community would end up if the “Hickel” map stands.
